Community is at the heart of everything we do. Our events bring neighbors together to connect, learn, and celebrate. From housing support to holiday joy, each event is designed to strengthen the Lower 9th Ward community and revitalize our neighborhood.

Annual Events

Housing Summit & Community Resource Fair
Hundreds of families join us each year to access housing support and essential resources. From city services to medical care, this event takes a holistic approach to building strong, stable homes and healthier futures.

Holiday Food Distribution
We serve families in our community each Thanksgiving with turkeys and food baskets. Healthy fresh food with a long shelf-life including sweet potatoes, onions, and shelf-stable items make this food distribution event last even longer in our community. This event helps ensure every household can celebrate with dignity and warmth while addressing food insecurity with care.

Trunk or Treat
This citywide event brings together fun and information. We attend at 15 locations, and residents enjoy Halloween festivities while learning about the services L9WHA offers.

Night Against Crime
As part of Crime Stoppers’ Night Against Crime, we share safety resources and highlight how community involvement can create a stronger, safer Lower 9th Ward.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
We honor Dr. King’s legacy through action: cleaning up our streets, planting trees, and working side by side to create a more beautiful and united community.

Hurricane Preparedness Forum
This annual event prepares residents with the tools and knowledge needed for storm season. Learn about insurance, evacuation plans, and home protection strategies.

Holiday Soirée
We end the year with a joyful celebration recognizing the people who make our work possible. Community members, funders, and sponsors gather for an evening of appreciation and connection.

Ongoing Community Programs

Monthly Community Workshops
Our monthly workshops offer residents practical, empowering education. Topics vary and have previously included:

  • How to self-fund home renovations
  • Understanding and reviewing your insurance policy
  • Preparing for hurricane season
  • Will and Succession planning
  • Navigating homeownership with expert guidance

Gardening Classes (Fall & Spring)

Learn how to grow your own food, beautify your space, and connect with nature. Our seasonal gardening classes offer hands-on experience and promote sustainability right in your own home.

L9WHA is proud to be a founding member of Water Wise Gulf South’s collective, joining other neighborhood associations across New Orleans to lead the way in climate resilience and sustainable growth.
